Third Coast Mahjong offers lessons carefully designed to engage beginning players from the moment they take a seat at our table. Whether you come solo or with a group, we’ve got everything you need to get Mahj’ing.
Our recommended course sequence is: Mahj 101, Mahj 102, Mahj 103, and Guided Open Play.
Mahj 101
Held in our private Ginkgo Room, this introductory class covers the basics of American-style mahjong—from understanding the game’s components and reading the official National Mah Jongg League card, to playing the game with proper table etiquette.

Mahj 101 is a 2.5 hour class limited to 6 learners.
Pre-registration is required. Mahj 101 is $75 per person.

Mahj 102
Held in our private Ginkgo Room, this beginner-level class is designed for new learners to continue their skill development through guided gameplay. We’ll review the basics, go over tips & strategies for mastering the NMJL card, then jump into a practice Charleston and guided gameplay.
*This class is for those who have already completed our Mahj 101 class or another equivalent in-person class.

Mahj 102 is a 2.5 hour class limited to 6 learners.

Mahj 103
Have you completed Mahj 101 & 102 and need more guidance to level-up your Beginner Mahjong skills?
Held in our private Gingko Room, Mahj 103 is an easy way to gain more confidence at the table. With a teacher to student ratio of 1 to 4, our instructor will help move each game forward with hands-on guidance by helping you assess your initial tiles, dig deeper into the NMJL card and practice pivoting.
This is NOT an advanced strategy class. This is for new learners seeking additional individualized guidance.
*This class is for those who have already completed Mahj 101 and Mahj 102 or the equivalent.

Mahj 103 is a 2 hour class limited to 4 learners.

Guided Open Play
Guided Open Play is an easy way to practice your Mahjong skills and gain confidence at the table. These sessions take place in the main parlor during regular Open Play hours.
Guided Open Play participants are seated together and an instructor is on hand to answer questions and help guide your game forward in a low-pressure way.
*This class is for those who have already completed Mahj 101 & Mahj 102 (or equivalent) and feel comfortable exploring game play with other beginners. If you are looking for more intensive practice within a small group environment, please register for our Mahj 103 class.
Guided Open Play is a 2 hour session limited to 4-8 players, depending on the Parlor’s current schedule.

Please bring your NMJL card if you have one. A limited number of cards are available to purchase at the parlor.

Pre-registration is required. Guided Open Play is $30 per person.
